#PointerNation was represented with pride at the annual Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association awards banquet in Wisconsin Dells Sunday, September 29! As we shared with you earlier this year, two of our Pointer Coaches would be honored with prestigious awards this fall.

— Dan Burreson was presented with the Steve Randall Award, as well as the Wisconsin High School Boys Basketball Coach of the Year Award.

The Steve Randall Award is given annually to one coach who best displays the attributes of integrity, passion, and professionalism possessed by Randall, who passed away in 2004 from heart surgery complications. During his career, Steve compiled a stellar coaching career at Turtle Lake, Iowa-Grant, and Oshkosh West.

Coach Burreson led the 2024 Pointer Boys Basketball team to our first-ever WIAA State Championship in March, was named the WBCA State Boys Coach of the Year this spring, is a WBCA Hall of Fame Member, WBCA Hall of Fame Selection Chair, and WBCA Executive Board Member.
— Coach Bill Mitchell was inducted into the Hall of Fame as an Assistant Coach. Bill began his Mineral Point coaching career in 1979 and continued coaching every year until 2019. He first coached 7th and 8th grade boys basketball with his brother, Mike. In 1986, he became the junior varsity boys basketball coach assisting Jim Bennett for the next nine years, followed by WBCA Hall of Fame Coach Dan Burreson for the next twelve years. In 2004, the WBCA recognized Bill as Assistant Coach of the Year. In 2007, Bill accepted the position of junior varsity girls basketball coach and remained in that position until 2019. During his tenure with the girls program, he assisted Chuck Bennett for two years, WBCA Hall of Fame Coach Mitch Wainwright for eight years, and Matt Austin for one year — all at the high school level. In his time as assistant coach, the Mineral Point Boys and Girls teams won 10 Conference titles, nine Regional titles, one Sectional title, and one State Championship in 2016. Bill finished his 40 year career where he began it — coaching 8th grade boys basketball for one year in 2022.

Bill was especially proud and honored to coach his four children: Josh, Nicole, Katie, and Emily throughout their playing years. He also was fortunate to be able to coach three of his brothers: Todd, Tom, and Jon; two nieces: Gretchen and Amelia and nephew Mikey.

We are so grateful for the lasting impact you have made and we thank you once again!
