The Mineral Point Kiwanis Club honored its March Students of the Month at its meeting Tuesday, March 4.

The students, who are members of the Senior class, are selected for this honor through a voting process by staff at the high school, and their biographies are written by themselves.

Laci Lindsey

Laci Lindsey is the youngest child of Ryan and Danielle Lindsey.  She has two older siblings, Kyla and Ross.  Kyla lives in Dubuque and works for the Grand River Center as a Marketing and Sales Manager; Ross is a Junior at UW-Madison in the nursing program.  Laci would like to thank her parents for supporting her and teaching her the importance of hard work and perseverance.  Laci has truly enjoyed growing up in the small community of Mineral Point; the support and generosity from everyone in the community is something very special.

Laci is actively involved in a wide range of clubs and extracurriculars. She is a member of Key Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Skills USA, Student Council, Pointer Media, and Forensics. She also takes great pride in her academics and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Laci has participated in basketball and volleyball throughout high school. One of her fondest memories of playing basketball was winning State her Freshman year alongside her two cousins. She is honored to be named first team All-Conference, Academic All-State, Team Captain, and a four-year letter winner. During her MP volleyball career, she was a three-year letter winner, 2023 Honorable Mention All-Conference, 2024 First Team All-Conference, 2024 WVCA All-State Tourney team, 2024 Honorable Mention All-State, while also being a part of the Volleyball Academic All-State. One of her most memorable volleyball seasons was her senior year, making history for Mineral Point with a State run.

Outside of school and athletics, Laci enjoys spending time with her family and friends, summers at the lake, waitressing at Popolos, and babysitting.

Next year, Laci plans to attend Edgewood College where she will pursue a nursing degree specializing in pediatrics.  She chose Edgewood for its small class size and supportive learning environment.

Laci would now like to take the time to thank all of the teachers, coaches, friends, and family who have supported her throughout high school and shaped her into the person she is today. She would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Erika Brunson for her guidance throughout high school.

Laci would also like to thank the Kiwanis for this opportunity and congratulate her fellow student of the month, Atley Potterton, for his hard work and dedication. Laci is excited for Atley to continue his education in Tennessee, as it has been his dream.

“Laci is a wonderful student to have in class.  She shows up each day with a smile and light-hearted attitude that brings levity to what can sometimes be a heavy topic.  She encourages those around her to do well, and is always quick to have a compliment for students around her.” ~ Mr. Ryne Ponsler, High School Spanish Teacher

“Laci, your hard work and determination inspire those around you, and your constant smile brings warmth to any room. You are a role model to younger children, always leading by example with your strong work ethic and uplifting spirit. Whether offering encouragement, lending a helping hand, or simply brightening someone’s day with your positivity, you make a lasting impact on everyone you meet. Enjoy the rest of your Senior year and I look forward to watching your continued success after graduation.” ~ Mrs. Morgan Burris, District Special Education Teacher

“Laci is a hard worker, has a great personality, and a positive attitude.  I have witnessed these traits, both in the classroom and on the court.  She can accomplish anything she sets her mind to.” ~ Mr. Dan Burreson, High School Social Studies Teacher

“Laci’s caring personality is something she has carried with her throughout her time in Mineral Point. As one example, way back in 2017, Laci took on a project to make and sell bath bombs. From this, she chose to donate $170 to Pointer Pantry. She was happy to help other kids in need and clearly has a heart of gold!” ~ Ms. Mo May Grimm, Pointer Kids Club Director

“Laci Lindsey came to school a quiet and shy little blondie. As one can see, she has kept her blonde hair her entire life.  Although not quite as shy, I still consider her to be humble and on the quieter side. Laci has always been a kind friend to those around her and quietly accepts the accolades she receives, both academically and athletically. When she recently accomplished 1,000 points in basketball she was continually humble. Laci babysits and helps others which is very admirable. Congratulations, Laci, on becoming Student of the Month! You are very deserving!” ~ Mrs. Jill McGuire, Kindergarten Teacher

“’Making people laugh is the greatest gift you can give.’ Miss Laci Lindsey has the beautiful ability to make every situation comfortable by always finding humor. I have felt lucky to consider you a bonus niece, Laci, which hasn’t always been fortunate for you because you get roped into things without a choice. Your bright personality, work ethic, and willingness to step out of your comfort zone will definitely open doors for you. Thank you for always giving me your all. Staverland, Pointer Media, Pointer Council, and Forensics won’t be the same without you next year, Sweet Girl.” ~ Mrs. Kristin Staver, High School English Teacher

“Being a leader on both the basketball and volleyball courts, Laci brings hard work and a competitive spirit to everything she does. She gives her best effort in the classroom, always pushing herself to succeed and understand the material. Whether she’s leading her team or just being a positive presence, Laci makes a difference in our school.  Congrats, Laci!” ~ Mrs. Valerie Martin, Middle/High School Business Teacher

“Congratulations on being named Student of the Month! I couldn’t be prouder of you, not only for your accomplishments on the court but also for your dedication in the classroom. You are an incredible role model for our youth, leading with kindness, humility, and determination. It has been an absolute privilege to coach you. Your talent, leadership, and ability to communicate with both me and your teammates played a huge role in our historic season and our first-ever State tournament appearance! More than that, your ability to make everyone feel welcome and important is something truly special. I have no doubt that you will continue to do amazing things at Edgewood College as you pursue nursing. They are lucky to have you, and I know you will make a difference wherever you go. Wishing you all the success in the world!” ~ Mrs. Kari Kabat, Middle School Math Teacher and Head Volleyball Coach

“Laci Lindsey’s bright spirit and infectious positivity make her a joy to be around, lighting up every room she enters. Her unwavering encouragement and kindness in the activities she participates in create a welcoming and supportive environment for all. With her passion for nursing and healthcare, she is sure to bring the same warmth and compassion to those she will care for in the future. Thank you, Laci, for being such a positive role model and a friend to all! We will certainly miss you next year and wish you all the best!” ~ Mrs. Erika Brunson, Middle/High School Counselor

Atley Potterton

Atley Potterton is the son of Jessie and Justin Potterton and the older brother of both Carver and Dekker. Atley has lived his entire life in Mineral Point and is honored to have received such a high level of education from the school there. He is also blessed to have the community support that Mineral Point gives, especially during sporting events.

During his time in Mineral Point, Atley has strived to be an active community and school district member. He has been involved in eight clubs, including FBLA, FFA, Skills USA, Book Club, Media, Forensics, National Honor Society, and Sources of Strength. He has advanced to State competitions six times from these clubs and volunteered at many community events.

Outside school, Atley is active in 4-H and has worked three jobs. For 4-H, he has been the President of his club for six consecutive years and has helped increase the membership from 20 to almost 50. For his jobs, he has spent the last two summers working at Lands’ End and working on his own business, where he mows.

Atley is also very proud of many academic achievements. Most notably, he was named Academic All-State in basketball, held himself to a 4.1 weighted GPA, will graduate with more than 50 college credits, and was on the high honor roll for every quarter of high school.

After high school, Atley’s current academic plan is to attend the University of Tennessee-Knoxville to get a dual Masters degree in Social Work and Agricultural Leadership. With the college credit he has received, he can obtain his Masters degree in only four years.

After college, he is unsure where to live but knows he would love to work in the therapeutic field.

Atley would like to thank his teachers at Mineral Point for supporting him and his future. Without them, his public speaking abilities would be nowhere near as high as they are now. He would also like to thank his parents for their continued support of him for every step of his journey.

Finally, Atley would like to congratulate his fellow Student of the Month, Laci Lindsey. She is among the most deserving students to receive this award, as she is an active member of our school and a positive role model for the people around her.

“Atley Potterton is an exceptional student who stands out for his hard work, determination, leadership, and positive attitude.  He’s incredibly involved in a wide variety of activities, from FFA and Skills USA to Forensics and Sources of Strength.  Whether in the classroom or on the court, Atley is a true leader by example.  He is a wonderful role model for his peers and younger students, always putting in his best effort and providing support for those around him. Congratulations, Atley, on your incredibly well-deserved recognition as Student of the Month.” ~ Mrs. Cindi Nothem, High School Math Teacher

“Atley is a very bright young man.  He always has insights to problems being discussed in class, and is quick to help others overcome obstacles that prevent them from understanding something. He demonstrates a humble intelligence that can be relied on during discussions, but will not drown out others’ voices or opinions.” ~ Mr. Ryne Ponsler, High School Spanish Teacher

“Atley, it has truly been a joy to watch you grow, both as a student and as an individual. Your accomplishments, not only within the school but also outside of it, are a testament to your dedication and hard work. Whether in the classroom, on the court, or in the community, you’ve consistently shown what it means to excel. Your hard work ethic and willingness to help others have made you a positive influence on everyone around you. You’ve set a wonderful example, and I am incredibly proud of all you’ve achieved.” ~ Mrs. Morgan Burris, District Special Education Teacher

“Atley is a fine example of a student/athlete.  He puts forth great effort in the classroom and on the basketball floor.  Atley is always looking to learn and to improve while helping others along the way.  On the basketball floor he always puts the team first.  Atley sets goals and then works to accomplish those goals.  I know he will do great things at the University of Tennessee.” ~ Mr. Dan Burreson, High School Social Studies Teacher and Head Boys Basketball Coach

“When I think of Atley Potterton, I wonder how he became a Senior so fast! Being a Kindergartner seems like yesterday! Atley was always a problem solver from the very beginning. He would come up with answers and try to prove his logic from a very young age. Thinking outside the box came naturally for him. This will serve him well in the future as he heads off to college and beyond!  Congratulations, Atley!  Watching you grow into the fine young man you are today has been joyous!” ~ Mrs. Jill McGuire, Kindergarten Teacher

“Congratulations on being nominated Student of the Month, Atley! You are kind, generous, and always willing to help those around you, whether it’s helping a classmate with schoolwork, or just being a great friend. Your fun personality and positive attitude make our Accounting class and school a better place, and your hard work and leadership in class and all your extracurriculars do not go unnoticed. You are more than deserving of this honor!” ~ Mrs. Valerie Martin, Middle/High School Business Teacher

“Atley Potterton has consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership both in and out of school, serving as a positive role model for his peers. His dedication to academic excellence, combined with his strong character and work ethic, sets him apart as an inspiring leader. With aspirations to pursue a degree in Agricultural Leadership and Social Work, Atley’s passion for making a difference in the lives of others is truly commendable. Thank you, Atley, for your unwavering commitment to leading by example and positively impacting those around you! Best of luck and enjoy the rest of your Senior year!” ~ Mrs. Erika Brunson, Middle/High School Counselor

“‘The greatest ability is dependability.’ Reliable people are conscientious, keep their promises, and show up when needed. When I think of Atley Potterton, this immediately comes to mind. Atley, I will forever be grateful for your ‘go get ’em’ attitude. Atley’s engagement in lessons, even when it’s grammar, is a breath of fresh air. He can make everything you tell him seem like the most crucial thing he hears all day. I can’t tell you how much I will miss your involvement in Pointer Media and Forensics next year. You have been a fantastic addition that I can always count on. Your dedication, loyalty, dependability, energetic personality, and charm will truly take you places. I will miss you dearly, but I can’t wait to see what is ahead for you, Dear Boy!” ~ Mrs. Kristin Staver, High School English Teacher
