District students scored well above the state average for public school students on Wisconsin Student Assessment System exams given during the 2018-19 school year, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction announced on Thursday, September 12.
The Forward assessment is administered to students in grades 3-8 for English Language Arts and Mathematics, grades 4 and 8 for Science, and grades 4, 8, and 10 for Social Studies.
Students in 11th grade took the ACT.
Nearly 453,000 public and private choice students took WSAS exams in 2018-19.
On the Forward exam:
- 69.6 percent of District students were proficient or advanced in mathematics compared with the state average of 43.4 percent.
- 57.8 percent of District students were proficient or advanced in English/Language Arts (ELA) compared with the state average of 40.8 percent.
- 70.6 of District students were proficient or advanced in science compared with the state average of 53.4.
- 60.8 percent of District students were proficient or advanced in social studies compared with the state average of 49.4.
The ACT is administered to high school juniors. Starting in 2016, the state required that all juniors take the ACT.
- Mineral Point juniors who took the ACT had a composite score of 21.9 compared with the state average of 19.6.
- Those same students were rated as 51.2 proficient or advanced in English Language Arts compared with the state average of 36.8.
- District students also outperformed the state average in mathematics (Mineral Point at 51.8 vs. state average of 29.2).
- And outperformed the stage average in science (Mineral Point at 46.6 vs. state average of 31.0).
