Other business:
— The Board recognized the hard work of the summer custodial staff. (This begins the meeting video)
— Unanimously approved (with Joni Heisner absent) the Seclusion & Restraint Report as presented by Mrs. Angela Klein, Pupil Services Director. (Go to the one hour, 47 minute mark)
— Unanimously approved (with Joni Heisner absent) SEL Guidance Curriculum for three years at the elementary level.
As Pupil Services Director Angela Klein explained, work on selecting this particular curriculum started with Wednesday PLC time. The Pupil Services team was working to align the standards and expectations for our students to the American School Counselor Association and Department of Public Instruction standards.
Because the district is planning to use ESSER funds to purchase the curriculum, the offerings must be evidence-based. This means there is scientific evidence through studies. The DPI has a list of evidence-based materials.
The elementary was able to get a 60-day trial last spring and our guidance counselor (Alex Welsh) partnered with classroom teachers to pilot the curriculum and gather feedback on its effectiveness. Because it is a digital curriculum, the company is able to make updates to the resources, which are immediately available to us.
Another benefit of this resource is that it provides screeners and recommendations for interventions that will further promote small group instruction. Instruction is possible through multiple staff members allowing for additional instruction to take place. The material is laid out in such a way that several staff could present it to their students at the same time.
(Go to the two hour, four minute, 45 second mark)
— The Board unanimously approved (with Joni Heisner absent) Dr. Sarah Fox as the district’s medical advisor. A medical advisor is part of the board’s policy of Emergency Nursing Services: https://mineralpointschools.org/wp-content/uploads/453-1-emergency-nursing-services.pdf
