Mineral Point Elementary School was just identified as a school that has demonstrated high reading achievement growth for students with disabilities.
The Department of Public Instruction recently conducted a rigorous review of data, based on numerous statistical, geographic and demographic factors. A select number of schools were identified as having both excellence in a single category and above average growth in other categories, as well as average or above average reading growth for general education students.
Representatives from Mineral Point will be invited to participate in a statewide workgroup to develop resources and materials sharing promising practices that have contributed to growth in reading achievement for students with disabilities.
“Specifically, I attribute this honor to Dixie Dempsey who has high expectations for the pupil services program, challenges the status quo, makes tough staffing decisions, accepts misguided criticism, and places students’ needs first,” said Superintendent Luke Francois.
“I attribute this growth to inclusion and good academic practices,” said Dempsey. “Morgan Burris and Benita Schmitz have been chosen as school representatives at the statewide work group where discussions will occur of what is being done to achieve these results.”
Besides Mineral Point Elementary, other school districts receiving this honor include: Cudahy, Milwaukee, Linn, Verona, La Crosse, Nekoosa, Kimberly, Green Bay, Sheboygan, Lena, Athens, Northland Pines, Colby, Eau Claire, Hudson, New Richmond, and Hurley.
