Members of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Reclamation, Environment, and Conservation department visited Mineral Point Elementary students Thursday.
The presentation was specifically designed to inform students about a prescribed burn that is scheduled for sometime this spring on the elementary’s oak savanna.
Students learned about the benefits of a prescribed burn for the native plants and how it creates new growth. They also learned through demonstrations about the tools the fire fighters use to keep the blaze under control such as a flapper, backpack sprayer, torch, and rake.
All involved are excited and hope for perfect weather so the burn can go off without a hitch. They look forward to seeing the rejuvenated plants and the new seeds grow that were planted by students.
