By the end of the year, students will be able to read prose and poetry [informational texts] of appropriate complexity for grade 1. Students will use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are writing about, narrate a single event and tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened. With guidance and support from adults, respond to questions to strengthen writing as needed. Students participate in shared research and writing projects. In mathematics students focus on four critical areas of development and understanding of: addition and subtraction, whole number relationships and place value, linear measurement, and geometric shapes.
