By the end of the year, students will be able to read and comprehend literature [informational texts] at the high end of the grades 4–5 text complexity band. Students write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view, informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas clearly, and narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using descriptive details. In mathematics students should focus on three critical areas: developing addition and subtraction of fractions and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions; extending division to 2-digit divisors and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths; and developing understanding of volume.
